The Navajo Indians in the area call it the Mad River. Its waters cascade into narrow canyons, twisting around gooseneck turns and passing the bases of untouched ruins, as it slices through geologic history. The San Juan River, alternately calm and clear, swift and turbulent. To those arriving from the tempestuous life of the cities, the San Juan's soothing strength recalls a sanity few are fortunate to discover. Beginning in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, the river cuts across a corner of New Mexico, delineates the northern boundary of the Navajo Reservation in southeastern Utah and finally relinquishes its strength into Lake Powell at the Utah-Arizona border. |
